Discovering Vocational Education
Many parents do not realize exactly what a vocational education really is. They just assume that a vocational school is exactly the same as a standard school. However, this is a misconception. The curriculum offered at the vocational schools very different from traditional schools. Most schools are considered college prep, which simply means their purpose is preparing your child for college.
Vocational education on the other hand, prepares your child for a career, not college. While most colleges will accept vocational education students, they tend to be limited to because of missing some college prep classes that most schools offer. Vocational education really opens a completely new world for those students who are unsure whether they want to attend college.
Vocational education tends to focus around several careers, such as auto repair, woodworking, carpentry, blacksmith, cosmetology, and other fields. There are many vocational schools across the country, and each has various topics that they teach, however they allow the students to gain valuable hands on experience where they would normally be studying foreign languages, or advanced mathematics.
Some parents say that vocational education leaves large gaps in their child's education; however, other parents sing the praises of vocational schools and feel that without the vocational education that their child received, they would not be where they are today. The debate over which type of education has been considered for years and both sides of the issue feel that they are correct. There are many students, who really enjoy vocational education programs; while other students dislike the programs and prefer to stay with schools that offer college prep courses. Many vocational programs are even able to assist students in securing part time jobs to help further their onsite training. Due to the increase in college expenses, many parents and students are opting to explore the vocational training options that are available. With the costs of college rising to close to 50,000 it is becoming a stretch for many to be able to afford. To stretch the vocational boundaries even further, there are many colleges that are offering vocational classes as well. For those who are moving from a high school vocational education program to a college program it is an almost seamless transition. For those transferring from college prep courses to vocational colleges, it takes some time to adjust. The educational opportunities available at the vocational schools are very valuable, the students are able to gain valuable work experience they would probably otherwise not be able to accomplish in the standard schools. While the number of vocational jobs is increasing over the years, the number of vocational education based schools is slowly decreasing. The debate over whether vocational schools are good or bad will likely continue to be debated, but most employers have proven repeatedly, they prefer trained employees over those whom must be trained from start to finish. Vocational schools definitely help ease the economic burden of training on the job, by sending students out trained they are highly desired in the public work force.
